L’histoire des huiles essentielles
Tout d’abord, un peu d’histoire.
L’aromathérapie est utilisée depuis des millénaires dans de nombreux pays. En Australie, il y a 30000 ans, les arborigènes utilisaient la fumigation avec le tea tree, Melaleuca alternifolia. Il y a 700 ans, au Pakistan, on utilisait déjà les alambics. En Inde, les eaux aromatiques et les parfums étaient largement utilisés. La Chine utilise depuis toujours les propriétés des plantes. L’Egypte et la Perse procédaient par distillation pour obtenir des parfums, des essences naturelles, des huiles essentielles et fabriquer des onguents. Les grecs utilisaient des huiles de parfum pour se guérir. En Amérique, les aztèques, mayas et incas connaissaient l’emploi des drogues végétales aromatiques. En Afrique, les utilisations d’encens sont courantes.
Le Moyen Orient reprennent la distillation des plantes après une désuétude de leurs utilisations. Elle arrive en Europe au 12ème siècle, suite au retour des croisades qui amène l’alambic mais celui-ci n’est utilisé que pour la fabrication de parfums. Les propriétés thérapeutiques sont découvertes par hasard.
En effet, au 20ème siécle, R. M. Gattefossé, pionnier de la parfumerie, se brûle les mains et les plonge dans un récipient rempli d’huiles essentielles de lavande. La cicatrisation est telle et le soulagement immédiat, le pousse à étudier les propriétés des huiles essentielles.
Elles viennent d’où les huiles essentielles
Je me dois de vous expliquer brièvement (rassurez vous, je ne vous fais pas un cours) comment on obtient de l’huile essentielle.
Toutes les huiles essentielles proviennent des végétaux. Parfois, on utilise les fleurs, parfois les feuilles et parfois l’écorce ou la racine. Pour être distillées, les plantes sont mises dans un alambic. Sous l’effet du feu, l’eau s’y transforme en vapeur qui passe à travers les plantes, se volatilise en entraînant les molécules aromatiques, puis se condense à nouveau dans le serpentin réfrigérant. A la sortie de l’alambic, un essencier ou vase florentin sépare l’huile essentielle – qui flotte à la surface – de l’eau de distillation, c’est-à-dire l’hydrolat.
La distillation en huile essentielle varie en proportion selon la plante. Ainsi, pour 100 kg de plantes, vous obtiendrez 3 kg d’huiles essentielles d’eucalyptus ou de pin, mais seulement 500 g d’huile essentielle de genièvre, ou 200 g de pin. C’est pour cela que le prix des huiles essentielles peut varier. La plus onéreuse de toutes est l’huile de néroli : pour en obtenir 1 kg, il faut à peu près une tonne de fleurs d’oranger.
Un vrai concentré d’actifs
Les huiles essentielles contiennent donc tous les actifs des végétaux. Elles possèdent de ce fait, des vertus thérapeutiques larges et agissent sur le terrain, c’est à dire qu’elle vise à rétablir l’équilibre de l’organisme. Cependant, elles n’ont pas tout à fait les mêmes propriétes que le totum de la plante (utilisation de la plante dans son intégralité).
L’huile essentielle est la quintessence d’une plante, un concentré de principes actifs. Chaque huile essentielle comporte ses spécificités, mais elles partagent toutes de puissantes propriétés antiseptiques. Ainsi que la capacité de traverser la peau et pénétrer très vite dans le système sanguin, pour imprégner vos organes.
Je tiens à insister sur le terme « essentielle ». En effet, Celles-ci ont des principes actifs concentrés, ce qui leur donne un fort pouvoir mais aussi de fortes précautions d’utilisations. Elles ne peuvent être utilisées tout le temps, sans connaissance précise. Car si elles peuvent être très efficaces, elles peuvent également être très dangereuses si mal utilisées ou mal tolérées.
Par ailleurs, certaines huiles essentielles ont des chémotypes noté « CT » sur les flacons. Cela signifie qu’elles présentent des principes actifs spécifiques. Par exemple : le romarin, rosmarinus officinalis, possède plusieurs chémotypes : CT à camphre qu’on utilisera pour les problématiques musculaires en autre tandis que les CT à cinéole et à verbénone seront utilisées principalement pour les problématiques de voies respiratoires et digestives.
Que dois-je vérifier quand j’achète une huile essentielle ?
Déjà le nom latin. En effet, deux huiles essentielles peuvent avoir des noms français qui se ressemblent et qui peuvent porter à confusion. Par exemble le ravensare et le ravintsare qui a plusieurs orthographe. Par contre, leur nom latin est bien différent et ne changera jamais : ravensara aromatica (ravensara) et cinnamomum camphora CT cinéole (ranvintasra).
Ensuite, le chémotype. On a vu qu’une plante peut avoir plusieurs chémotype qui précisera son utilisation.
Enfin, pour vous assurer d’avoir une huile essentielle de qualité, il convient de vérifier :
- sa provenance
- qu’elle soit 100% naturelle, pure et totale
- qu’elle ne soit ni rectifiée, ni colorée, ni peroxydée ou déterpénée.

Comment vérifier si je peux utiliser une huile essentielle ?
Demandez à votre naturopathe, votre herboriste ou votre phytothérapeute. Vérifier bien la nature de l’utilisation. Certaines peuvent être ingérées d’autres noms, certaines brûlent la peau au contact du soleil, d’autres encore sont neurotoxiques. Eviter les automédications.
Enfin, tester les huiles essentielles sur le creux de votre poignet. Et en cas de brûlure, lavez-vous avec du savon et de l’eau ou mettez un peu d’huile végétale qui permettra de diluer les huiles essentielles.
Lors de votre achat, précisez pour qui est destinée l’huile essentielle. Les enfants ne peuvent pas toutes les utiliser par exemple. Précisez également quelle est la problématique. et pensez à diluer votre huile essentielle avec de l’huile végétale.
Les huiles essentielles sont bonnes et efficaces mais elles requièrent des précautions et une bonne connaissance.
